Atascadero, San Luis Obispo County
Atascadero was founded in 1913 by Edward Gardner Lewis, a magazine publisher who bought a 23,000-acre ranch and planned a model colony on it. His domed headquarters, finished in 1918, serves as city hall; it was badly damaged by an earthquake in 2003 and reopened ten years later. The town did not formally incorporate until 1979.
